Nyxi resurrects the Gamecube controller for the Nintendo Switch

Those who were lucky enough to have a Gamecube controller in hand know how much this device marked its time. Despite a somewhat small steering cross, the locations and shapes of the action buttons, the adaptive triggers and the feel left lasting memories for gamers of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Wakerof Super Smash Bros. Melee of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II – Rogue Leader and of F-Zero GX. As proof, Nintendo released an adapter a few years ago to use Gamecube gamepads on the Switch, essentially for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it is true. The manufacturer Nyxi goes a little further with its Wizard controller which uses the color code and, above all, the great ergonomic codes of the Gamecube gamepad, but which can above all be attached to the switch console when it is used in nomadic mode.

We therefore find on the right the very large button button A, the small B and the curved keys X and Y, all accompanied by the yellow stick C. On the left, the directional cross is part of it as well as an analog stick. Precision, the latter uses the Hall effect: when a current flows in a conductor exposed to a magnetic field, the voltage present is perpendicular to the current and the magnetic field. This physical property makes it possible to detect movements with enough precision to be able to be used in the context of a video game activity. Attention, the sticks using the Hall effect are still less precise than the classic analog sticks, but they work without friction, which should avoid the problem of drift, well known to Joy-Con owners, promises the manufacturer. When the Switch is used in docked mode, both sides of the Nyxi Wizard can be attached to a central base to act as a controller, just like the Joy-Con can be.

The Nyxi Wizard embeds a few buttons that did not exist on the Gamecube gamepad, including an additional non-adaptive trigger on the left side to match the requirements of current Nintendo Switch games. There are also two additional remappable keys under the shell.

The Nintendo Switch Nyxi Wizard controller is already available and you will have to shed around €65 to afford it.
