Obsolete, old-school (and free) verification of Twitter accounts will disappear in a few months

The arrival of new macaroons and the takeover of Twitter Blue had already made it almost useless, but Elon Musk assured that the certification which dated from before the takeover would soon disappear.

It’s not really a surprise: since he acquired the social network, Musk has put a big kick in the anthill. Between unfair dismissals, the general amnesty for suspended accounts and the destruction of the few barriers to harassment and identity theft posed by the former management team, the news is burning. After the fiasco of the first launch of Twitter Blue, he reactivated the project a few days ago and soon, many verified accounts may well lose their authentication.

All Twitter Verification Colors

Perhaps you have already seen them passed: the yellow macaroons have already made their appearance. A priori free, they are used to certify companies and their creation is probably not unrelated to the usurpations, catastrophic for some of them, of the image of brands that took place during the first launch of Twitter Blue.

If they have not yet appeared, gray checks should follow soon, meaning that the account is held by a political figure or a government administration.

Finally, the blue macaroons, if they are still awarded to notable personalities who had obtained them before the takeover, will soon be exclusively reserved for those who pay the famous 8 dollars monthly (11 dollars on iOS). Because the billionaire explained that, within a few months, all those who do not pay will lose their verification, and Twitter added that this change could take place at any time, without prior notification of the persons concerned. In addition to going to the checkout, it will be necessary to be able to benefit from it not to practice harassment, spread spam or deliberately misleading content.

Free certification made obsolete

If the reappearance of Twitter Blue is a new nail in the coffin of old-fashioned verification, Elon Musk has never hidden his intention to do away with this form of certification that existed when he bought the platform. For several days now, there have been many profiles certified in this way whose sticker displays the following text: “ This account has been verified for some time. It may no longer be noticeable “. A text that only appears if you click on it, the icon remaining the same as for Twitter Blue subscribers, which maintains the confusion.

Some of the problems raised by the first paid macaron test have certainly been corrected by the arrival of new certifications, but many profiles do not fall into the categories concerned. Thus, videographers, footballers, journalists and other musicians can at best hope for a blue badge which, for many Twitter users, will no longer be synonymous with certification, but simply with a receipt proudly displayed to the public. And it remains to be seen how Twitter Blue accounts will be verified, since the social network has largely cut its moderation teams since its change of ownership. Get ready, a certified Squeezie or Beyonce may soon be contacting you to win you some iPhones.
