E-cars should become cheaper. That is the declared goal of many manufacturers, including VW. The Wolfsburg-based company has therefore long had plans for an affordable Stromer that is below the previous models. Although the ID.2 is not scheduled to appear until 2025, it is already clear: the cheap electric car will not be as cheap as planned.

An electric car for around 20,000 euros, even less – that was VW’s ambitious plan. The entry-level model in e-mobility from Wolfsburg is intended to appeal to a younger generation of buyers and will be launched on the market in 2025. Under the rumored name ID.2, Volkswagen wants to electrify the Polo class. Nothing changes in these plans. Yet how cheap the cheapest e-car in Lower Saxony should beis now on another page.
The new VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer made this clear in an interview with the magazine Electrified. When asked about the price of the ID.2, he replies: “If you look at the price increases, you quickly get from the desirable 20,000 euros to 25,000 euros. Exactly where we place ourselves remains to be seen.”

The cost explosion in gas prices is also having an effect at VW. Although work is being done to optimize costs every year, the VW brand boss does not want to rule out that the gas surcharge will affect the end customer price. Ultimately, however, it depends how the prices of combustion engines and e-cars are developing in comparison. Customers hoping for a cheap electric car may have to look elsewhere – for example at Hyundai or GM.
