Soak up the sun before the stress of Christmas or simply extend the summer into Advent: a beach holiday in November has many advantages. It improves your mood, which is usually not so good due to the bad weather here. It also shows popular holiday resorts from their quiet side and provides the body with light, warmth and lots of vitamin D in the dark season. We present five beach destinations in and around Europe that tempt you with sun and sea.
1. Tunisia: Djerba – a cheap South Sea dream in the Mediterranean
In just a three-hour flight to another world: Djerba, located on the east coast of Tunisia, is currently the quickest destination to reach when it comes to maximum sun and beach. This also applies to the price-performance ratio. The flat island is also called the “South Sea dream in the Mediterranean” because of its white beaches, turquoise sea and many palm trees.
With seven hours of sunshine a day and temperatures of around 22 degrees, you can relax on warm sand or in a deck chair. The sea feels almost as pleasant: the water temperatures are around 20 degrees. The November escape to Djerba has another advantage: many activities such as cycling, beach volleyball or beach walks are only fun outside of the main season, because in summer it is far too hot for that here in northern Africa.
2. Morocco: Agadir – white city with a dream bay on the Atlantic
In the southwest of Morocco lies the country’s most important bathing destination – the white city of Agadir with its ten kilometer-long, golden-yellow, crescent-shaped sandy beach. Its big advantage is that it is located in a bay on the Atlantic that is touched by the warm Gulf Stream. Agadir is also considered the sunniest place in Morocco – the sun shines from the sky 320 days a year and there is dry warmth all year round.
For the month of November this means ideal beach weather with an average of 25 degrees and ten and a half hours of sunshine. The sea temperature is around 20 degrees. But just hanging out on the beach is almost too bad. In addition to the cozy cafes, restaurants and bars on the waterfront, there are a number of interesting places to discover: from the Bahia Palace to a botanical garden to the Saadian Tombs and the Koutoubia Mosque. By the way: The flight time from Germany is around four hours.
3. Canary Islands: bathing weather times 7
The Canary Islands belong to Spain and are made up of seven islands in the Atlantic: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. As different as the individual islands are, they also have brilliant similarities: Even in winter, daytime temperatures rarely fall below 20 degrees and they can be reached in a four to five hour flight from Germany.
Tenerife, the largest Canary Island is a contrasting all-rounder with the dormant Pico del Teide volcano (3718 meters high), whale and dolphin watching opportunities and 40 beaches. The beaches range from rugged rocks and gorges in the west to a Caribbean beach in the northeast to coastal deserts in the southeast and black lava beaches in the northwest.
Fuerteventura, the easternmost, lies just 100 kilometers from the African continent – making it the warmest of the seven islands. Almost 150 kilometers of wide and bright sandy beaches make Fuerteventura the perfect destination for beach fans. The Atlantic not only shines in surreal turquoise tones, but also with average temperatures of 21 degrees. Water sports enthusiasts will also find paradisiacal conditions – from strong winds to high waves.
Gran Canaria attracts with black lava, white sandy beaches and lots of greenery. The flagship is the six kilometer long sandy beach Playa de Maspalomas, where the sea meets the desert. Just behind the beach there are high dunes of up to 20 meters.
The island Lanzarote is a little different than her six sisters: With around 100 volcanic cones and only dark sandy beaches on its mostly rugged coastline, it is not one of the classic bathing islands. With its rugged charm, it is more suitable for athletes, nature and culture lovers.
La Palma is the third smallest Canary Island and is known not only for its longest volcanic eruption in autumn 2021, but also for its natural beauty: cliffs, gorges, laurel and pine forests, dragon tree groves, flowers in all colors, caves and natural rock pools.
La Gomera is almost circular and offers nature lovers wonderful holiday conditions – from hiking and waterfall tours to whale watching tours.
The smallest of the archipelago is called El Hierro and has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve for more than 20 years. Mass tourism is a foreign word here. You can also swim, because around 90 percent of the coast slopes steeply into the sea and there are only a few beaches. And the surf is strong and dangerous in many places. However, this doesn’t bother divers, who find a dozen diving centers at the southern tip. And neither do those seeking peace and quiet who love warm weather.
4. United Arab Emirates: Bathtub-warm sea in Dubai
No chance for the bad weather blues: The capital of the United Arab Emirates can be reached in a good six hour flight from Germany and also lives up to its reputation as a superlative destination when it comes to beach holidays. On its various raised islands there are kilometers of sandy beaches on the turquoise blue sea. Popular beach holiday destinations are also the beaches Jumeirah Beach and the party beach Barasati, the only public beach where alcohol is sold.
The climate is at its best in November: warm, but not too hot, daytime temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius and the sea is bathtub-warm. The highlights of Dubai are the gold market “Gold Souk” with hundreds of gold shops, the Al-Ain camel market with the most expensive camels and dromedaries in the world, the highest tower in the world, the 828 meter high Burj Khalifa and the most beautiful beaches in the United Arab Emirates .
5. Turkish Riviera: mountains, sea, sun, sand, legendary historical sites
The Turkish Riviera stretches along the 230 kilometer long coastal strip on the Mediterranean and is very popular because of its spectacular landscape with the Taurus Mountains, which are up to 3000 meters high. Here, between Kemer in the west and Alanya in the east, are well-known seaside resorts such as Antalya, Belek and Side with fine sandy beaches, bays with turquoise water and a number of ancient sites.
In November the temperatures are usually above 20 degrees and the sea also attracts with water that is around 21 degrees warm. The sun shines for around six hours a day, although there can be short rain showers in the evenings. But even then the values rarely fall below 15 degrees.
