Every year, GfK Entertainment determines the most successful albums and singles of the year. In 2021, ABBA and Nathan Evans top the lists.

Every year GfK Entertainment determines the Official German Annual Charts. In 2021 a band from Sweden that has been established for decades and a British newcomer top the lists of the most successful albums and singles: ABBA and Nathan Evans (26).

The comeback album “Voyage” by Agnetha Fältskog (71), Anni-Frid Lyngstad (76), Björn Ulvaeus (76) and Benny Andersson (74) topped the German charts for three weeks, longer than any other record in 2021. To date, it has sold more than 400,000 times in this country. His position at number one in the annual album charts is therefore no surprise – except for the band itself. “We are surprised and very happy. We are gasping,” said ABBA, thanking their loyal fans.

Helene Fischer grabs second place in the annual album charts

Schlager queen Helene Fischer (37) came in second in the LP ranking with her current work “Rausch”, followed by AC / DC in third with “Power Up”. The punk rock band Die Ärzte landed in fourth and fifth place with “Dunkel” and Santiano with “When the cold comes”.

When it comes to singles, newcomer Nathan Evans from Great Britain has a clear lead in 2021. His interpretation of the New Zealand sailor’s song “Wellerman” has sold almost 800,000 copies so far and stayed at number one in the singles charts for ten weeks. The ex-postman is very happy about the continued success. “Everything that happened in the last year was just overwhelming and changed my life,” explains Evans. “And to end the year like this is just crazy, I still can’t really believe it all.”

Behind Nathan Evans were the summer hit “Bad Habits” by superstar Ed Sheeran (30, second place) as well as the dance numbers “The Business” by Tiësto (52, third place) and “Friday” by Riton & Nightcrawlers feat. Mufasa & Hypeman (fourth place). The top five was completed by last year’s leader in the single annual charts: The Weeknd (31) with “Save Your Tears”.

The best-placed German-language song comes from Bausa & Apache 207

In terms of German-language titles, Bausa & Apache 207 were able to place the highest in the singles ranking. Their joint song “Madonna” landed at number eleven. Separately from each other, both artists had already been ahead in terms of top-ranked German-language songs for the past four years. Bausa dominated 2017 and 2018, Apache 207 in the two following years.
