Olaf Scholz: “No surprise, I’m happy about it”

Olaf Scholz (65) was infected with the coronavirus. On Monday afternoon, the Chancellor announced on X, formerly Twitter, that his corona tests had been positive.

This is what he writes about the short message service: “This is clearly not a surprise, and I’m happy about it. My current Covid-19 tests show two lines. If there are few symptoms, I’m assuming a mild course and will initially only work from my desk.” Scholz lives in Potsdam, where he will recover from his corona disease is not known.

It is not the Chancellor’s first Covid-19 infection: he had already tested positive for Corona in autumn 2022. At that time, he isolated himself in the small apartment in the Chancellery so that he could continue to do his work.

Appointments cancelled

In the next few days, Scholz was actually supposed to receive the Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico (59) and take over the leadership of the federal cabinet meeting. The former has already been canceled and Scholz will probably lead the meeting via video link.

With New Year’s Eve and Christmas just around the corner, the illness is likely to put a damper on some of his personal plans this year.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, there are currently more corona infections than there have been in 1.5 years.
