Omicron: the Île-de-France region, the French epicenter of the new variant

Omicron soon to be the majority in Île-de-France? This new variant, originating in South Africa, is progressing very rapidly in the region. In one week, the number of positive cases increased by 20% and now represents almost a quarter of the positive cases detected.

There are even up to 27% in the city of Paris.

“Omicron is probably in the process of becoming the majority in Île-de-France,” IT engineer Guillaume Rozier, founder of the CovidTracker site, tweeted on Sunday, December 19.

Already majority

According to some researchers, the variant is already in the majority in the region since this weekend. According to their data, this would represent around 25,000 daily cases and that number would double every other day.

“It is estimated that Omicron passed 50% of cases in Île-de-France this weekend,” said Florence Débarre, researcher at CNRS, on Twitter, based on the most recent data available on Public Health France.

According to the latest data published by Public Health France, which covers the period from December 11 to 17, nearly 9% of the positive cases screened do not carry the L452R mutation and are therefore likely to be Omicron cases.
