On black ice – with a taxi in the river: the driver is dead, the passenger is saved

A terrible tragedy happened early Wednesday evening during a taxi ride in Enns. The driver, a 60-year-old local, was traveling with a passenger – a sailor – to a ship anchored in Ennshafen. The two talked while driving.Passenger swam to the shoreIn Hafenstraße, the taxi driver lost control of his car in a left turn, probably due to black ice, and fell straight over the quay wall into the harbor basin. The passenger sitting on the back seat was just able to free himself from the wreck and swim to shore. He survived the accident with hypothermia but uninjured. Drowned helplessly The driver must have drowned helplessly. “The taxi was about three meters deep in the water with the tires up and the lights on,” says FF operations manager Alfred Stummer. Fire brigade divers attached chains to the car, which was then hoisted ashore with a crane. The driver could not be resuscitated. The relatives had to be cared for by the crisis intervention team.
