An instant messaging update will strengthen the confidentiality of your ephemeral conversations.
The credo of WhatsApp since its launch has been respect for privacy, and Meta continues in this direction with new options to secure your most intimate exchanges.
WhatsApp will increase the privacy of ephemeral messages
A few months ago, WhatsApp introduced a new system of ephemeral messages. As on Snapchat or Instagram, this option allows you to make your messages disappear once they have been read by your correspondent(s). This system also works for photos and videos sent. The contents are automatically deleted from the transcript once they have been viewed in order to guarantee the confidentiality of your exchanges.
Meta’s instant messaging system, however, had a hole in the racket. It was indeed possible, for the fastest, to take a screenshot and bypass the system for deleting messages, or to record the screen on video to keep track of messages and shared content.
WhatsApp will finally address this problem very soon, as shown by the latest beta of messaging for iOS devices.
A blocking of screenshots soon activated by default
In the coming weeks, taking a screenshot in a conversation with ephemeral messages will no longer be possible. If one of the participants has fun wanting to take a screenshot, a message will appear on their screen to inform them that the capture has been blocked.
The system will work the same way for video captures of a smartphone screen. WhatsApp will detect the recording and block it before showing the same message.
Users will not have to do anything to enable this option. It will be in place by default for everyone once this update is rolled out to all users.
For the moment, WhatsApp does not give any release date for this feature, so you will have to look carefully at the release notes for the next updates.
