On the Pernerinsel – Festival Richard: A bastard without gender

From a family story to the actions of the notorious ruler: after the reprocessing of “Jedermann”, Karin Henkel’s four-hour view of Shakespeare’s “Richard III” will be on the Salzburg Festival from tomorrow (25th) on the Pernerinsel in Hallein Program.

That already happened with Shakespeare at the festival! “I am determined to perform a bastard” This is what Karin Henkel thought for her production, a co-production with the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg. She made the royal dramas, including “Heinrich VI.”, The cornerstone of her staging for Hallein’s Pernerinsel. On the one hand, she looks at Richard’s childhood (“the Kid”) and at his unscrupulous exercise of power (“the King”).

Henkel wants to show a multi-layered character – from power-obsessed to brutal, cynical to bizarre and funny. And thereby deprives the figure of the sex. Henkel: “I don’t see Richard as a man or a woman, the role is written without sex. He’s a toad – that’s what he says of himself. “

Lina Beckmann will be this amphibian named Richard. Around her: among others Paul Herwig, Bettina Stucky, Maik Solbach.
