THE FILM OF THE DAY

Adapted from the eponymous novel by Sorj Chalandon, Profession du Père is an oppressive intimate drama directed by Jean-Pierre Améris. The director tackles the theme of mystification through the character of young Émile, who greatly admires his father.

And for good reason, the latter tells him that he was a judo champion, parachutist, footballer, spy and even private adviser to Charles de Gaulle… whom he now plans to assassinate to save French Algeria!

In the shoes of this ambiguous patriarchal figure, Benoît Poelvoorde delivers an exceptional performance. Accustomed to crazy roles, this time he embodies the dark side of a character always in excess (like the Italian comedians Alberto Sordi or Vittorio Gassman whom he had as a reference) even violent when he finds himself in prey to delirious madness and conspiracy.
