Since last September, WhatsApp allows you to create chat chains. This one-way distribution tool allows admins to send text, photos, videos, links, stickers, or even surveys to their audiences.
This discussion channel feature quickly attracted the favor of many personalities, companies and other associations, but also many media outlets. Among the most popular, we find Real Madrid with more than 47 million subscribers, Netflix (33.3 million) and FC Barcelona (30.3 million). Some media also have several million followers, but what about the French media?
WhatsApp: four millionaires (and not one more) for the French media
On WhatsApp, it was the various branches of France Médias Monde that blew up the counters. France 24 tops the list with more than 3.7 million subscribers, followed by RFI Appels sur l’Actualité (1.7 million), RFI (1.4 million), and finally Jeune Afrique (1.2 million). “ Our audience, particularly African, uses WhatsApp a lot », explained Cécile Mégie, director of strategies at France Médias Monde (FMM) at the end of last year. The group had already started its development on WhatsApp in 2019, but the functionalities were then much more restricted than today.
A new playing field for information
In the rest of the ranking, it is M6 which manages to do well with just over 600,000 subscribers, followed by the Canal+ F1 team (308,000 subscribers), very present on social networks. The Football division and the Canal+ channel each have just over 280,000 subscribers. For its part, Hugo Décrypte has more than 308,000 followers.
For the media, these new WhatsApp channels represent an additional way to carve out a place in people’s lives, in a more direct and more engaging way than on Facebook or on X.com. In the case of France 24, WhatsApp would even have become the primary source of traffic.
For users, these same WhatsApp channels constitute an excellent way to follow important subjects (and which interest them directly), without necessarily being drowned in an overflow of information and other sponsored content, as is the case on Facebook (For example).
