One of the lead performers in the live-action series “One Piece” opened up about the pressure he felt at the idea of bringing the best-selling manga of all time to the screen.
After the failure of Cowboy Bebop, canceled at the end of its first season, Netflix now knows that it has no room for error with its live action adaptation of the One Piece manga. A few weeks ago, the main performers of the project were announced with in particular Iñaki Godoy in the role of Luffy, Emily Rudd in that of Nami or Mackenyu who was chosen to play Roronoa Zoro.
Chosen for his part to play the cook Sanji, the British actor Taz Skylar confided in our British colleagues from Magazine Night on the pressure on his shoulders to appear in the adaptation of the best-selling manga of all time. Between intense physical preparation and the expectations of the fans, the latter confided that managing the daily pressure is not the easiest:
I was playing Hamlet at the Young Vic in London, and at the same time I was learning taekwondo for two to three hours a day, while taking cooking lessons. While trying to continue leading a normal life as a human being. I’ve finally reached a stage where I’m just trying to do my best. If I thought during the filming of the expectations of the fans, it would be a sure failure. So I think about the fact that this role has been entrusted to me, and I only have to put all my heart and soul into it to deliver a performance that I will be proud of.
Filming for several more months, the live-action series One Piece does not yet have a release date on Netflix (a release in 2023 seems preferred); remember that the project is produced by Marty Adelstein (Prison Break) with the artistic supervision of Eiichiro Oda, the author of the manga (100 volumes available from Glénat editions).
