Kohfeldt declares immediate resignation after slap

KAS Eupen suffered a terrible defeat in the Belgian league and that also had far-reaching consequences. Coach Florian Kohfeldt, known from his time at Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg, asked for his “release” immediately afterwards.

Florian Kohfeldt has announced his immediate resignation as coach of the Belgian first division soccer team KAS Eupen. The club announced this after the painful 4-0 defeat at Standard Liège on Saturday. Accordingly, the former coach of SV Werder Bremen “asked for his release for sporting and personal reasons” in an intensive conversation with those responsible for the club.

“I hope that this step will give the team an additional push for the playoffs and that we will be rewarded for our joint work at the end of the season! I keep my fingers crossed for AS!” Kohfeldt is quoted in the statement. KAS General Director Christoph Henkel said: “We have not managed to convince Florian that we can achieve our goals together with him.”

After the main round, KAS Eupen now has to go into the relegation round, in which the four worst teams play two direct relegations and one team that plays relegation games.

Kohfeldt, who coached both Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, only started his coaching job in Belgium last summer. He was only able to win seven of 30 games and only averaged 0.8 points per game. At the end of January, the coach experienced a strange situation with his team in the league.

Due to smoke bombs, the duel at RWD Molenbeek was interrupted shortly before the end and was continued a few days later from the 86th minute of the game. The catch-up minutes were held behind closed doors. This includes the players who were in action at the time of the interruption.
