Orange flood warning: a flood peak expected Thursday morning in South-Gironde

By Arnaud Dejeans

The flood forecasting service revised its forecasts downward on Tuesday, January 11 at 4 p.m. The water should not exceed the fateful bar of 9 meters at La Réole. But vigilance is required

The heavy rains last weekend in the Pyrenees and the Garonne watershed continue their descent. The Garonne Girondine went into orange flood vigilance this Tuesday, January 11 in the morning. The Gironde prefecture sent very worrying forecasts at midday, announcing water heights between “10 meters and 10.6 meters during the day on Wednesday”. That is to say a higher flood than that recorded last February which paralyzed all of South Gironde.

The fateful 9-meter bar

The flood forecasting service revised the figures downwards in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday: “At La Réole, the maximum height should not exceed 9 meters on the morning of Thursday, January 13”. The levels will continue to increase and cause generalized overflows in the Réolais, where the dikes were weakened during the February 2021 flood. The forecasting service warns the population: “A significant flood is forming. The flood peak is expected to be recorded Thursday morning.

Good news: the tidal coefficients are low (around 40), which should allow good drainage in the coming hours.
