Demonstrations by Canadian truckers who have blocked the capital Ottawa for ten days are shaking Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau demands that this stop, in vain. The editorialist Vincent Hervouët returned on Wednesday to this movement which is spreading.

Closed borders and open windows

“It was with a Canadian flag that opponents of anti-Covid measures demonstrated in the Anglo-Saxon world on Tuesday. It is incongruous but after all, it was by singing the Marseillaise that the spring of the peoples ignited Europe. of 1848. Revolts need symbols.

Truck drivers are nice to New York city workers who refuse to be fired unless they’re vaccinated. New Zealanders wave the Canadian flag on their motorhome convoy blocking the Parliament Building in Wellington. There, the zero Covid policy has put the whole country under a health bubble. There were only 53 deaths for 5 million inhabitants. The others are 95% vaccinated. They are told they are survivors, but they are tired of living with closed borders and open windows.

Prime Minister Jacinda Adern, who embodies this draconian policy, generalized confinement and permanent social control, may have concerns for her re-election. This is also what hangs in the face of Justin Trudeau.

The Canadian Prime Minister reappeared while he was confined to his home

He had maintained a Sioux, cautious silence. He left his residence in the countryside, his official hut to come to scrap in Parliament. In fact, he seemed totally overwhelmed by the surrounding traffic jam, this revolt in the style of yellow vests, with furious people bivouacking, fighting while playing the horn and nothing seems to unite except the hatred of the elite in power .

The Prime Minister protested. “It has to stop!” He reacted to the state of emergency like a weak parent watching his offspring ransack the house… He added: “The pandemic has sucked for all Canadians”. Understood, including me. Marvel of narcissism and political ingenuity.

What Justin Trudeau is obviously struggling to understand is that there is in the Canadian movement a powerful rejection of everything it embodies. With him in power, Canada wants to be an example for the world. The best country for immigrants, the laboratory of diversity, the temple of virtue. To think otherwise is already to give in to a form of intolerance. Obviously, this utopia is severely protected by a stifling political correctness. And the Covid has imposed a new turn of the screw on freedoms. Probably too much.

Justin Trudeau won the election in October by playing hard on the Covid. When the protest started, he, so cool, with a smile on his face and compassion in his buttonhole, reacted with contempt. He equated the demonstrators with the extreme right, with conspiracies, with dark forces. The polls give him the wrong of this condescension: 32% support the truck drivers when only 10% of Canadians are not vaccinated.

In the United States, the Trumpists dream that the movement crosses the border…

A truck named desire. The Donald is calling on him to come to Washington with American truckers to protest “Joe Biden’s ridiculous anti-Covid policies”. Republican party heavyweights cheer on the freedom convoy, Sen. Ted Cruz applauds the heroes and patriots behind the wheel.

Canada now has more to offer the world than maple syrup, ice skates and genius sociologists.
