Over-indebtedness cases will start to rise again in 2023

The number of filings for overindebtedness increased by 8% last year compared to 2022, to reach an annual total of 121,617, the Banque de France announced on Thursday, but this number remains lower than those of the period of pre-Covid.

Over-indebtedness affects more women and the 35-54 age groupaccording to a monthly study by the French central bank, released at the end of December.

It mainly concerns tenants (76%) and people whose resources are below the poverty line (57%). Last year, the number of files, which had decreased in 2022 compared to 2021, remained almost halved compared to the last ten years, says the Bank of France.

An increasing number of FICP registrants

The number of bank designations for opening a bank account was 30,271 last year, down 9% year-on-year. The role of the Banque de France is, in fact, to enforce the right to an account: in the event of refusal from a banking establishment or lack of response within 15 days after a request to open an account, an individual can do so. enter and have a deposit account opened free of charge with basic banking services at another establishment.

To raise awareness of all of its support services, the Banque de France, which has halved the number of its permanent branches since 2010, launched a single number at the end of 2022, 3414. In 2023 it handled more than 1.85 million requests at its counters, by telephone and in writing (postal or internet).
