Overwatch 2: already 25 million players and record daily attendance for free-to-play

In 6 years of existence, Overwatch had become one of the essential references in the field of FPS multiplayer. The paid game had attracted more than 50 million followers (February 2020 figure), but Activision Blizzard made the bet to risk stopping it this year to propose a Overwatch 2 in free-to-playwith some changed mechanics and a new economic ecosystem.

The title has been available since last week and, despite a somewhat chaotic launch, the public has been there. Activison Blizzard announced thatOverwatch 2 reunited over 25 million unique players in 10 days“already reaching an almost evenly distributed daily player base across EMEA, Asia and Americas”, with a daily player spike nearly triple that of Overwatch. Well, technically that also means that not all buyers of the first game have tried its sequel yet, but those numbers are still impressive.

“The launch of Overwatch 2 was such an important moment for Blizzard. We are thrilled to bring new players from around the world into the dynamic universe of Overwatch while welcoming back the existing Blizzard community,” said Mike Ybarra, President of Blizzard Entertainment. “This is just the beginning – there are so many possibilities to explore in the world of Overwatch, and we can’t wait for players to experience everything the team is building for live play. »

It now remains to be seen whether Activision Blizzard will manage to retain this new audience while retaining its initial fan base.
