Basel attracted providers with liberal regulations
In the canton of Basel-Stadt, two approaches are pending that require intervention in the parking situation. The previously particularly liberal regulations had attracted many providers to the city. Actually, the people of Basel should benefit from it. But because of the large number of providers, there are now also many scooters in the Rhine city.

The people of Basel have mixed opinions about the new method of transportation. Although these are basically practical, it is criticized that many simply lie around where someone has parked them after use.

Actually, the aim was to promote ecological and new offers with the e-scooters, says Nicole Ryf, media spokeswoman for the construction and transport department of Basel-Stadt. “Like everywhere, you have to find a balance. Between being as liberal as possible so that there are exciting offers and developing them further and making sure that public space is available to everyone.»
Wetzikon bans electric scooters after testing
While Lucerne has not yet approved any scooters, the city of Bern has reacted and spelled back the number of providers. There are only two providers left in the federal city. The Zurich city of Wetzikon goes even further and has already banned scooters.
It was a nuisance to many.
After eight months and around 60 complaints, Mayor Pascal Bassu canceled the test. “It was a nuisance for many,” says the SP politician. The e-scooters were lying around and parked incorrectly. “People with wheelchairs didn’t come by anymore.”
E-scooter ban no, but action is necessary
The e-scooter ban in Wetzikon is an overreaction, says ZHAW mobility researcher Thomas Sauter-Servaes. However, according to the head of the Transport Systems course, intervention is necessary: ”Get away from laissez-faire, do everything.” Rather go in the direction where we fix a few things. Possibly positive incentives too.
In Basel, e-scooters are likely to shape the cityscape for a while. A political decision will not be made before 2024.
