  • In Pakistan, the Election Commission has published the results of the parliamentary elections.
  • Independent candidates won 101 seats in the 266-member parliament.
  • Most of them are close to former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He is in prison – his party was excluded from the elections.

Nawaz Sharif’s Muslim League has 75 seats – Sharif is also a former Prime Minister of Pakistan. Former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s party won 54 seats.

Following this result, observers expect it to be difficult to form a government in Pakistan.

The imprisoned Khan still has numerous supporters among the population.

The final results were released more than 60 hours after polls closed on Thursday, casting doubt on the process. Both Khan and Sharif have already claimed victory.

Popular – but in prison

The popular former cricketer Khan was sentenced to ten years in prison at the end of January for revealing state secrets. He previously received a three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. He has been in prison since August. In 2022, Khan was removed from office by a vote of no confidence in parliament. The 71-year-old accuses the military of being responsible for his downfall.
