“Partygate”: on TripAdvisor, Internet users rename 10 Downing Street “the best nightclub” in London

“The best and only party in London!” While Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister, is caught in a whirlwind of revelations about several parties organized at 10 Downing Street in full confinement, the “British” humor is always present. On TripAdvisor, a site where travelers can leave opinions on restaurants and tourist sites, many Internet users have not hesitated to leave comments on the place of residence of the “PM”, to recommend going there to party.

“Great selection of cheeses and wines (…) There were 7 dates where we could come”, wrote one of them. “One of the best secret nightclubs in London. There are many kinds of parties possible. I went there with a suitcase full of alcohol, but don’t worry if you forget to bring something to drink, because it there’s cheese and wine”, commented another netizen in December.

“Two nice bouncers at the door dressed as policemen, and free to enter, the host was a bit of a clown with messy hair”, underlined another Internet user.

As calls for his resignation follow one another, Boris Johnson notably had to apologize to Queen Elizabeth II. One such party, which the Prime Minister did not attend, was held in Downing Street on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021.

In response, Boris Johnson assured this Sunday that he was going to tackle the “underlying culture” in Downing Street having allowed several parties in full confinement, to calm the anger of his fellow citizens. “I can assure you that the Prime Minister is contrite and deeply sorry for what happened”, Oliver Dowden, chairman of the Conservative Party and minister without portfolio, told the BBC when asked about the celebrations.
