Petition: Increase parental allowance!

The parental benefit rates have remained the same since 2007 – despite inflation. Three mothers want to change that. You can sign your petition until noon tomorrow (June 1st).

Having children can be great. But after the birth, money is tight in many families. Because an income is completely or partially lost and the parental allowance (usually 65 percent of the net salary) is hardly enough to absorb it. This is especially true in times like these, when everything is becoming more expensive due to inflation – from diapers to baby food.

An increase in parental benefit rates is therefore urgently needed, according to Sandra Runge, Daniela Weckmann and Nancy Koch, three mothers from Berlin and Frankfurt. So at the beginning of April they started a petition on the Internet platform of the Bundestag’s Petitions Committee. Among other things, they demand:

  • A higher minimum amount – the 300 euros that every fourth young mother currently has to get by with, for example because she is a student or in training, is far too little to secure the subsistence level.
  • A regular adjustment for inflation – because the current rates are worth a quarter less than when parental allowance was introduced in 2007 due to the loss of purchasing power.
  • An increase in the maximum amount by 35 percent – because with the current maximum rate of 1,800 euros, many families simply cannot afford that the father, who usually has the higher income, takes longer parental leave and the care work is distributed more fairly.

Almost 60,000 have already signed the petition, also because influencers like Marie Nasemann, herself a mother of two, have drummed loudly for it. This means that the topic will definitely be discussed in the Petitions Committee in the near future. “The more votes we get together, the greater the pressure we can put on politics, of course,” says initiator Sandra Runge. So if you still want to support the three in the last few meters – here’s the petition: https://epetitionen.bundestag.de/content/petitionen/_2023/
