Peugeot e-208 in long-term rental at €150/month, good or bad deal?

In a context that is not very favorable to combustion, Peugeot offers an interesting financial alternative with its e-208, a 100% electric city car available from €150/month. But is it really a good deal? Decryption.

The Peugeot e-208 // Source: Peugeot FranceBetween petrol and diesel at more than 2 euros per liter and an unfavorable context for thermal cars with, in 2035, the definitive cessation of their sale in Europe, many are those who wish to take the lead and embark on the deep end of the electric. French manufacturers offer several more or less interesting electric models that generally meet the needs of motorists.

Among them is the Peugeot e-208, the third best-selling electric vehicle in 2021 in France with 17,859 registrations, just behind the Renault Zoé (23,573) and the Tesla Model 3 (24,911). And to continue its good momentum, Peugeot intends to attract a few more customers via an attractive financing offer: the Peugeot e-208 from 150 euros per month.

Except that on closer inspection, Peugeot already offered this offer at the start of the year, for one euro even less, since it was displayed at 149 euros per month. An offer that we already deciphered a few months ago, but we are going to review this “new financing” in order to highlight the few differences between the offer at the start of the year and the offer on which Peugeot has been communicating since A few days.

Today, after having deciphered the offer of the Škoda Enyaq iV available from 299 euros/month, that of the Kia EV6 from 297 euros/month, the MG ZS EV at 99 euros/month, the Peugeot e- 208 to 149 euros/month, the Renault Mégane E-Tech at 248 euros/month, the Volkswagen ID.3 at 229 euros/month, the Renault Twingo E-Tech at 79 euros/month, the Tesla Model 3 for less than 400 euros/month, the Mini Electric from 350 euros/month, the Hyundai Kona Electric from 139 euros/month, the electric Fiat 500 from 109 euros/month, the Nissan Leaf from from €99/month, the Volkswagen ID.4 from €309/month, it’s again the turn of the e-208 to go through our decryption sequence.

Peugeot e-208

What is the Peugeot e-208 model offered at 150 euros/month?

Not surprisingly, like the offer at the start of the year, this is the entry-level model of the e-208, without options, and therefore in no way the version that accompanies the sales brochure. It is a Peugeot e-208 in its “Active” finish with a series of interesting equipment, even if there are some missing options that could be very useful. As standard, on the “Active” finish, we find these few important pieces of equipment:

  • Cruise control / speed limiter
  • LED lights
  • Air conditioner
  • Radio with 7-inch touch screen, DAB function, Bluetooth, and Mirror Screen (Apple CarPlay / Android Auto / MirrorLink)
  • On-board charger 7.4 kW Single phase
  • Mode 2 electric cable T2/EF charging sockets Green up

The basic color is rather nice because it is a “Yellow Faro” model. On the other hand, if you want to add one or two options (including colors), you immediately exit the offer and the monthly payments go up. Too bad the car does not benefit from real rims, but 16-inch sheet metal models. It also lacks some essentials today such as parking radars, very useful for a city car, or the detection of blind spots. This equipment is to be found on the upper levels, but we immediately leave the offer at 150 euros per month.

All Peugeot e-208s are equipped with an electric motor with 136 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. The battery, with a capacity of 50 kWh, can cover 362 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. Compared to the model at the start of the year, this Peugeot e-208 has recently received some updates, enough to gain a few kilometers of autonomy. Indeed, if the e-208 claimed before 340 km, Peugeot now announces 362 km according to the WLTP cycle. What bring it closer to the 400 km threshold and its main competitor, the Renault Zoé.

What are the conditions to be eligible for the Peugeot e-208 LLD offer?

This is a long-term rental offer on 24 months and 12,000 kilometers maximum. Peugeot indicates a limit of 500 km per month for its offer, but you suspect that it will not be necessary to make a monthly report to know if you exceed the conditions of the offer. Peugeot specifies that each additional kilometer, that is to say beyond 12,000 km after two years of rental, will be charged 0.07 euro. Let’s imagine a return of the car at 14,500 km, so you have an additional 2,500 km, Peugeot will therefore charge you 175 euros.

The site indicates that the offer at 150 euros per month is subject to a contribution of 2,000 euros. In reality, the contribution is 10,500 euros, but this is absorbed by the ecological bonus of 6,000 euros and the conversion bonus of 2,500 euros, which therefore requires the scrapping of an old vehicle.

To qualify for the conversion bonus, an old diesel or petrol vehicle must be scrapped. The old scrapped vehicle must be a car or van with a gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3.5 tonnes. The date of the first registration of this vehicle must be before 2011 for diesels and before 2006 for gasolines.

The vehicle must also belong to the beneficiary for at least one year. And finally, the reference tax income per unit indicated on the tax notice of your income for the previous year must be less than or equal to €13,489. The conditions are therefore numerous and, ultimately, few customers will be affected.

How much will the Peugeot e-208 LLD offer cost you?

Over two years of lease, your Peugeot e-208 will cost you €5,450. Peugeot displays its car from 34,550 euros on its site, ecological bonus of 6,000 euros and conversion bonus of 2,500 euros not deducted. This gives us, in the end, a model displayed at the catalog price of 26,050 euros with all the aid removed. And if the bonus is valid for everyone, as stated above, this is not the case for the conversion bonus.

Starting from this price, you will therefore pay, over three years, 20.9% of the price of your car. This is relatively correct if we assume that a discount over two years for this type of car is between 20 and 25%. As the offer is not an LOA, there is no option to buy back the vehicle. It must be returned at the end of the rental..

Beware of the cost of repairs, which are always expensive at the time of return. We advise you to do it before at a bodybuilder, it will cost you less than at a dealership. If you take a vehicle back to your dealer after your LLD, he will also be a little less careful about the costs of repairs.

This beautiful version in “GT” finish is not affected by this financing offer at €150/month.

What are the advantages of the Peugeot e-208 LLD offer

An electric car for “only” 150 euros per month is indeed a good deal, especially since, even with the aid, some models have difficulty reaching the price of their thermal equivalence. The lion firm also highlights the price of fuel, which is very high at the moment, by announcing that refueling an e-208 costs only 8 euros. A rather clumsy formulation, but not necessarily wrong either, everything will depend on where and how you will recharge your car.

At home on a classic outlet, it will actually cost less than 10 euros. This will be less the case on an Ionity terminal where it will take more than double, if not more, but also much less time to refuel. Everything will depend on your use, again.

What are the disadvantages of the Peugeot e-208 LLD offer

There are a few disadvantages, and in particular the offer itself, which is conditional on the conversion bonus and which immediately excludes a lot of people. In terms of equipment, as stated above, it is far from being a panacea, since the car does not have alloy wheels, no parking radars, no digital instrumentation system and no on-board GPS. .

The prescribed mileage in two years is low with 500 km per month, or 12,000 kilometers over the rental period. This will be suitable for the majority of customers who will use the car to get to work, but it does not leave much headroom for long journeys. The Peugeot e-208 has a good appetite for electrons on the motorway, the autonomy on this type of route unfortunately does not exceed 210 kilometers, which is generally quite low for an electric car, even a city car.

As this is a two-year offer and an electric vehicle requires less maintenance than a thermal model, Peugeot does not include maintenance in its financing. It should also be noted that, compared to the supply at the start of the year, there was a slight price inflation, since the basic e-208, once all the aid had been withdrawn, started from 24,590 euros instead of 26,050 euros today. But Peugeot practiced a discount of 1,500 euros on its model at the time, something which does not seem to be the case for this offer.
