Peugeot is today unveiling the new version of its bestseller, the 208. An emblematic city car and symbol of the revival of the brand, it is very likely that the restyled model will be a future commercial success.
For 4 years, the 208 has been the best-selling car in France, just ahead of the Renault Clio IV. Unveiled for the first time at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2019, it sold like hot cakes all over Europe. This does not mean that Peugeot is resting on its laurels. The 2023 restyling could make it even more popular, whether thermal or electric.
Remarkable aesthetic improvements
Peugeot designers took inspiration from their hypercar model, the 9X8, to give it a new light signature. A new bright LED bar will appear on the front face, equipped with ” three juxtaposed red claws “. Very typical of the brand’s recent designs.
Lacquered black mirrors will dress all versions of the 208, and customers will have the choice between 7 different body colors: Bleu Vertigo, Gris Selenium, Blanc Banquise, Jaune Agueda, Gris Artense, Noir Perla or Rouge Elixir. In the GT version, it is possible to opt for a completely black roof and wheel arches in the same color as an option.
The rims have also been redesigned and are available in 16 or 17 inches. The interior is reviewed, especially for the seats with the arrival of Alcantara trimmed with Adamite green stitching. A 10-inch infotainment screen is now standard across the range while the digital driver display will be standard on the Allure and GT ranges. On the steering wheel side, there is no real change, apart from the affixing of the brand’s new coat of arms. Models equipped with the six-speed manual transmission will feature a new gearshift knob.
The new 208 will be equipped with the I-Connect system as standard for all ranges, but the most advanced infotainment system is offered as an option. Either way, it will control itself on the new screen. Compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it also includes wireless support. The Allure and GT ranges will be equipped with front and rear HD parking cameras. They will also be equipped with three USB-C sockets and a more powerful induction charger than before.
An improved electric version
The electric model will experience the same overall facelift, but will be optimized along the way. The e-208 will therefore offer an extended range of up to 400 kilometers, according to the WLTP standard. It will be equipped with a new 51 kWh battery and a 156 horsepower motor. That’s more than enough for this little city car that isn’t sold for beating lap times.
The proposed charger is a 7.4 kW single-phase, but it is possible to opt for an 11 kW three-phase charger as an option. With this more powerful configuration, charging is optimized, and the battery can go from 20 to 80% in less than 25 minutes. You will have to go through a fast charging station for this. Already a success in the past, the new version will certainly follow the same path.
Only one regret in this announcement: the prices and availability of the new 208 have not been announced. With a good amount of aesthetic improvements and an optimization of the electric version, there is no doubt that the city car will remain in the top sales.
