VSIt was not a complete success. With a record abstention rate (52.59%), the first round of legislative elections failed to mobilize voters for the third time in less than two months. However, if more than half of the French people registered on the electoral lists shunned the polls last Sunday, interest seems to be increasing at the dawn of the second round. The opportunity for Philippe Labro to draw his first observations.
First, the evidence is that “Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a rather rare political animal: skilful, great rhetorician, capable of taking on crowds and organizing unity”. The leader of La France insoumise, who carried out a coup thanks to his electoral alliance on the left, now appears as the only real opponent of Emmanuel Macron.

Then, Philippe Labro analyzes the expectations of voters: “The French prefer a limited majority, perhaps they would even like cohabitation”. In this case, the blank vote can become “very fashionable”, believes Philippe Labro. Be that as it may, this new National Assembly, made up of a good number of new deputies, “could become a cauldron, a rat race”. Therefore, this situation risks complicating things for the President of the Republic, weakened in the Assembly. On the other hand, it could well benefit former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and his Horizons party: “He will become even more essential than he already is”, assures the writer.
