Google is said to be actively working on on-screen cameras, as several patents discovered in recent months have revealed. The Google Pixel 7 could be the manufacturer’s first device to take advantage of this technology.
Our colleagues from LetsGoDigital discovered a new Google patent filed with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) for a ” display setup for mobile computing devices Which tells us more about the under-screen camera technology Google is working on.
According to the patent information, Google would seek to increase the space occupied by the screen, and placing the front camera under the screen would then be one of the solutions favored by the manufacturer. The camera below the screen would work the same as that of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, since the screen of Google’s prototype would use an emissive display, with a small non-emissive part at the height of the camera so that the outside light can reach the sensor.

The Pixel 7 could have multiple sensors under the screen
According to the Google patent, several sensors are placed under the OLED screen, including a selfie camera, a flash and a light sensor. The first two would be located in the upper right corner of the screen, while the light sensor is positioned at the top left.
For now, it is not known exactly when Google plans to market a smartphone with such technology, but the company is already surrounding itself with the best engineers to ensure it delivers performance that meets consumers’ expectations. Indeed, the technology presented on the patent would have been invented by Sangmoo Choi, a Google engineer who had spent 14 years at Samsung Display as principal engineer and team leader for the development of a new AMOLED technology.
As is the case on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the patent reveals that the camera under the Google screen will not be completely invisible. Indeed, on the folding smartphone from Samsung, as we saw during our test of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, we can always distinguish the part of the screen in which the camera is located under the screen. Google would therefore still not have managed to match other manufacturers such as Xiaomi and its MIX 4, which offers a camera under the invisible screen.
