We originally thought the smartphone was going to be unveiled alongside the Pixel 6 at the end of 2021, but Google ultimately put the project on hold, believing its device was not up to par. competition.
Indeed, the sources of leaker Ross Young indicated a few months ago that the smartphone was not as competitive as it should be, and that the higher component costs compared to Samsung were an obstacle to the success of the smartphone. Nevertheless, Google does not seem to have completely abandoned its Pixel Fold, since it was spotted on the Geekbench 4 benchmark.
The resurrected Pixel Fold, an imminent release?
As revealed by the leaker Mukul Sharma on his Twitter account, the Pixel Fold, which we know for the moment under its code name “Google Pipit” was spotted on the Geekbench 4 benchmark. The smartphone obviously works with Android 12, and is equipped with a 8-core processor supported by 12 GB of RAM. It could therefore be that the Pixel Fold runs under the new Android 12.1 version as soon as it is released.
The smartphone would use the same Tensor chip as the Pixel 6, which is significantly less powerful than the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from Qualcomm that we will find for example on the new Honor Magic V or on the next Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 from Samsung. As of its release, the Google Pixel Fold could therefore be lagging behind its competitors.
We also learned last year that the Pixel Fold would be worse than the Pixel 6 in photos, since the foldable smartphone would use the same sensors as the Pixel 5. However, as the project has been put on hold for many months, Google could very well choose to improve the photo part of its device to remain competitive against other foldable smartphones, which are starting to offer technical sheets similar to top smartphones. traditional range.
