PlayStation: players deprived of access to their games purchased digitally on PS3 and PS Vita

For several days, players on PS3 and PS Vita have found themselves without access to their games. In question, an issue of expiration date.

Is the launch of the new PlayStation Plus causing hiccups in Sony’s systems? For the past few days, players on PS3 and PS Vita have found themselves without access to certain paid games on the PlayStation Store. Based on the feedback from those concerned, this seems to target retro games in particular, such as those dating from the PS1. It is in particular Square Enix games that are affected as Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy VI.

So did @PlayStation expires the PSOne Classics versions of #ChronoCross and #ChronoTrigger by setting the date on new downloads to 12/31/1969? This is preventing me from playing my purchased copies on Vita and PS3. @ModernVintageG @dark1x pic.twitter.com/wxRebNIZWh

We can see from the screenshot shared in tweet that the expiration date of the game is set to December 31, 1969. This is not a random date, it corresponds to “Unix time” which serves as starting point for dates on most computer systems. Thankfully, this issue doesn’t appear to be affecting the PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 at this time.

A connection with the PlayStation Plus?

It’s hard not to think about the PlayStation Plus when this problem appears. Indeed, Sony has announced a new version of its video game subscription with several packages. The PlayStation Plus Premium package includes access to downloadable PS1 games and is expected to launch at least June, in less than 60 days. One can therefore wonder about the coincidence of certain PS1 games becoming inaccessible at the time when PS1 games are supposed to enter a subscription service.

Whatever the reason, those who have purchased these games should still have access to them. It is hoped that Sony and Square Enix can quickly fix this problem.
