Do you know that There are words that you use every day and know well – until suddenly you should form the majority of the term. Because it often turns out that the plural of many German words is not as obvious as one might think at first glance!

The German grammar actually regulates clearly how the majority of words are now formed. Most of the time it is enough to add an "-en" or "-innen" to the word, and the plural is already properly formed (students; nation / nations). Or we simply add an "s" to the word (smartphone / smartphones); sometimes an "e" (competition / competitions). But it cannot be determined exactly, after all there are many, many exceptions to every rule that the Duden has defined for plural formation. Not to forget: Many words do not change from the singular to the plural, but always stay the same. This can be confirmed, for example, by THE PEOPLE who take their parents' plates to the HOLIDAY.

That is why even German professionals keep falling into the trap, even though they are actually well versed. Popular traps include:

  • Cactus: Not "cactus" or "cacti" – "cacti" is the correct plural.
  • Visa: Not "visas" or even "visas", but "visas"
  • Mode: The mode, the "modes"? No, it has to be called "modes"!
  • Globe: Often the supposedly correct "Globi" is used – but both "Globus" and "Globen" are correct
  • Comma: Mandatory tool for everyone who values ​​correct grammar and punctuation: make sure that the "commas" are set correctly!
  • Click: One click, two "clicks"? No, "clicks" is the correct plural!
  • Mountains: Nothing changes here, the "mountains" also apply to the plural
