On the occasion of the broadcast of “Pokémon Detective Pikachu” this evening on TMC, dive back into your childhood memories and try to find the names of these 10 creatures.

While Pokémon Detective Pikachu is broadcast tonight on TMC, it’s time to check if your childhood memories are intact and if you are still able to recognize the famous creatures that inhabit the film.
From Pikachu to Bulbasaur via Charizard and Mewtwo, you will have to find the names of the following 10 Pokémon. While some should logically not cause you any problems, others may force you to draw on distant memories, and in particular on the famous list of the first 150 creatures!

Animal inspired
Pokémon, of course, are not animals. However, they borrow some of their attributes from different species. The film team was therefore inspired by several of them to define the appearance of their creatures. In particular, they studied mice, turtles, monkeys and even eagles. As for Pikachu, it was Ryan Reynolds’ performance that was particularly useful to them: “He completely appropriated it”says animation supervisor Ferran Domenech. “Thanks to his game, Pikachu has adopted his humor, his tone of voice, his facial expressions, his expressions and his gestures”.
Pokemon town
For the creation of Ryme City (the fictional city where the action of the feature film takes place), the production wanted to favor a stylized realism. Production designer Nigel Phelps explains that director Rob Letterman wanted a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis with well-known and more exotic inspirations. “We started from London and ended up in a city that borrows from New York, Tokyo and London”he said. “There are a lot of intentional contradictions. Cars drive on the left, but Ryme City has an American feel to it.”

A real New Zealand mime – called Trygve Wakenshawour – was hired to advise the animators and actor Justice Smith during the sequence where Tim and Pikachu have to question a Mr Mime. In addition, puppets were also made for the visual effects department to use as inspiration and for the actors to use as reference points. “Pikachu is often perched on my shoulder”says Smith. “So I was walking around with a weighted puppet on my shoulder. Then the animators adapted it to my movements, taking into account the way I tilt my head or how I react when he throws his tail in the face”.
