Popular primary: Christiane Taubira, victorious, will call on the other left-wing candidates to “unite”

Those registered in the popular primary voted Christiane Taubira this Sunday as the most apt to represent the left in the presidential election next April. A vote of which she was the only candidate of weight to recognize the legitimacy.

She was the poll favorite. Christiane Taubira came first in the votes with the mention “Good +”, ahead of Yannick Jadot (Fairly good +), Jean-Luc Mélenchon (Fairly good -), Pierre Larrouturou (Passable +), Anne Hidalgo (Passable +), Charlotte Marchandise (Fair -) and Anna Agueb-Porterie (Insufficient).

Already a presidential candidate in 2002, Christiane Taubira only recently announced her participation in next April. She is currently only credited with 5% of voting intentions, according to the latest OpinionWay barometer for CNEWS, and is therefore ahead of Anne Hidalgo (2%) but behind Yannick Jadot (6%) and Jean-Luc Mélenchon ( 9%). Figures that could be shaken up with the victory of the former Keeper of the Seals.

A call for union despite the reluctance

Despite his victory in the popular primary, his left-wing counterparts had announced that they would not join the winner of the ballot, except for the three other candidates less known to the general public who had agreed to participate, Pierre Larrouturou, Charlotte Marchandise and Anna Agueb-Porterie. Christiane Taubira, however, announced in front of her supporters, in her campaign headquarters, that she was going to call the other left-wing candidates to convince them to “unite and rally” for which nearly 400,000 people voted. She indicated that she wished to speak with the ecologist, rebellious, socialist and communist leaders.

To benefit from the support of the popular Primary, it will also have to sign a “gathering contract” and “include the spirit of the programmatic common base in its program”. An approach that seems complex if neither Yannick Jadot, nor Anne Hidalgo, nor Jean-Luc Mélenchon wish to engage in this popular rallying.

This election, in which all French people could register and vote, aims to designate a single candidate who will unite different currents of the left: socialist, environmentalist and rebellious. With more than 467,000 registered voters and a participation rate of 84.1%, the organizers have already judged this election to be a great success.
