Premier League: Boxing Day maintained despite the increase in Covid cases in England

The twenty Premier League clubs agreed on Monday to maintain Boxing Day despite the many cases of Covid-19 in some squads.

Gathered for an exceptional committee, the English teams have mostly agreed to continue playing the matches scheduled during the holiday season, despite the upsurge in the number of positive cases of Covid which has resulted in the postponement of several meetings, report the English media of the Daily Mail and the BBC.

The Cup schedule could change, with clubs and authorities discussing the removal of FA Cup replay from the third and fourth rounds and the reduction of the League Cup semi-finals to a simple meeting without a second leg, adds the report.

According to the BBC, the 20th day of the Premier League, which starts on December 28, could be postponed entirely “in order to reduce the pressure on the workforce”.

A new meeting between the clubs should be held in two weeks to take stock of the situation.
