Presidential 2022: Christiane Taubira will submit to the result of the Popular Primary

One more step towards the presidential election. After indicating in December that she “considered” to engage in the race for the Elysee, the former Minister of Justice under François Hollande, Christiane Taubira, announces this Sunday that she will submit to the result of the Popular Primary. “I accept the rules of the People’s Primary and will accept the verdict”, said the former Minister of Justice, traveling to Bondy (Seine-Saint-Denis).

“In December, I indicated a deadline in mid-January for a possible confirmation of my candidacy. We are almost there”, detailed Christiane Taubira (see video at the top of this article). “Right now, I proclaim that I accept the rules of the People’s Primary. I take and accept the risk of democracy. Above all, I will accept the verdict of the People’s Primary.”

The Popular Primary, organized by a citizen collective, should make it possible to put in place, at the end of January, a vote, in order to designate a single candidate on the left, carried by a “popular nomination”. According to the organizers, the ballot will take place with or without the consent of the candidates, “to invest the most credible personality to win this election”. More than 300,000 people have already registered to participate in this process.

The day before, Anne Hidalgo, candidate invested by the Socialist Party, had taken a step back, after announcing in December on TF1 her intention to go through a primary to avoid the division on the left. “This proposal has not, for the moment, been the subject of an agreement”, admitted the mayor of Paris, credited with 3 to 3.5% of the vote in our last poll. “I heard the words of Yannick Jadot (the EELV candidate). A primary only makes sense if it serves to have a common candidate and not to add candidates. If the Greens around Yannick Jadot are not present , it’s no longer called a primary. “

Arnaud Montebourg, also a presidential candidate, also pleads for a single candidacy on the left, without specifying whether he intended to participate in the Popular Primary.

Christiane Taubira “is one more candidate, that’s obvious”, commented Jean-Luc Mélenchon during the Grand Jury LCI-RTL-Le Figaro. “I understand that there is an aspiration to union, but I tell these people that union is a brake on mobilization.”
