Presidential: why Édouard Philippe and Emmanuel Macron no longer get along

Victor Chabert

While a meeting is being held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Republic En Marche to prepare the candidacy of Emmanuel Macron, Édouard Philippe will not be present. Nothing is going well between the former Prime Minister and the outgoing President, who wants him not to gain too much weight in the architecture of his next majority.

TO ANALYSE

“I’m not asking for anything. But I don’t want to be bothered, since it’s a fashionable term,” said Édouard Philippe with our colleagues from opinion
. The reason for this nervousness is Emmanuel Macron. The outgoing president has decided to veto the merger of the small party Agir, center right, founded by the Minister for Foreign Trade Franck Riester, and that of Horizons, founded by Édouard Philippe. The mayor of Le Havre therefore suspends his participation in the famous “common house” called Together Citizens! , a few weeks ago. So Tuesday, while a campaign meeting is being held at LREM headquarters, the former Prime Minister will not be present.

The significant weight of Édouard Philippe on the right wing of LREM

Why did Emmanuel Macron veto the merger of Agir and Horizons? Because Édouard Philippe takes on too much weight by structuring the right wing of the majority. Since leaving Matignon, he has not stopped anticipating the presidential deadline of 2022, and does everything to be at the center of the game whatever the result.

If Emmanuel Macron is re-elected, nothing can be decided without him if he has the largest group of majority deputies. Conversely, if the outgoing president loses, it is towards Édouard Philippe that En Marche will turn. Out of the question for the President of the Republic to let himself be locked up.
