Driven by the surge in energy, the prices of almost all products are on the rise. Thus, according to the UFC Que Choisir, which publishes its index for the month of August, inflation will be 6.3% over one year.
No improvement expected on the inflation front before the start of 2023. This was declared by the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire, Wednesday August 24, on the set of Cdansl’Air on France 5.
The monthly index established by the UFC-Que Choisir proves him right: according to the consumer association, the overall inflation for households is 6.3% over one year for the month of August. The food sector is particularly affected, with an increase of +8.3% compared to August 2021, despite a lull in fresh fruits and vegetables, notes UFC Que Choisir. Overall, the cost of purchases in supermarkets is up 9.2% over one year.

Despite the various government boosts (tariff blocker for gas and electricity, discounts on fuel prices, etc.), it is energy expenditure that is the biggest burden on the French budget. Compared to January 2021, the energy item recorded an overall inflation of 34%.

In terms of housing, if the rent increases are minimal (+0.6%), household equipment, including all appliances, shows an increase of 7%.
Finally, unsurprisingly, the rise in energy costs is having an impact on transport: +12% for train tickets, and +53% for long-haul flights!

Bruno Le Maire, however, wanted to be positive, explaining that there is no scenario on the table today that foresees double-digit inflation in France. This is not the case in the United Kingdom, where inflation is currently at 10.1%.
