In June, the meeting of the Commonwealth of Nations takes place in East African Rwanda. Also present: Prince Charles and his wife, Duchess Camilla.
The British heir to the throne Prince Charles (73) and his wife, Duchess Camilla (74), will attend the meeting of the heads of government of the Commonwealth of Nations in Rwanda in June. This was announced by the royal family on Monday. In a statement by Charles, it was said that especially in the current phase of recovery from the corona pandemic, it is more important than ever that all countries of the confederation come together.
“As a family of approximately 2.6 billion people from 54 nations on six continents, the Commonwealth represents a rich diversity of traditions, experiences and talents that can help create an equal, sustainable and prosperous future,” writes Charles. They look forward to attending the meeting in the capital, Kigali, to achieve common goals “in light of the recent forced shifts.”
Already his sixth attendance at the Commonwealth meeting
Prince Charles has attended this meeting of heads of government five times, most recently in 2018 in Great Britain. He has previously traveled to Scotland, Uganda, Sri Lanka and Malta for the event. In 2018, the community states also officially announced that Prince Charles will succeed Queen Elizabeth II (95) as Head of the Commonwealth.
Rwanda has only been a member of the Commonwealth since 2009, although the East African country has never been part of the British Empire before. In contrast to countries of the Commonwealth Realms – such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand or Jamaica, where the Queen is also the official head of state – there is a big difference. Like South Africa, India and Pakistan, Rwanda is a normal member and in this case has its own state representative in President Paul Kagame (64).
