Prince Charles could pass the title “Duke of Edinburgh” on to his grandson Prince Louis. A Royal expert suspects that the future monarch will pass over his brother Prince Edward for a reason.

For Prince Charles (72), the title “Duke of Edinburgh”, which Prince Philip († 99) wore from 1947 until his death in April 2021, could symbolize his aspired reign of the monarchy. Because the son of Queen Elizabeth (95) is said to want a smaller structure of the royal family after the death of his mother. Accordingly, only he, Duchess Camilla (73) and the Cambridges would be considered working royals and have official titles.

His brother Prince Edward (57) has already been promised the honor of “Duke of Edinburgh”. Can his brother deny him this so easily?

Prince Charles currently bears the title of his late father

After all, the Count of Wessex was personally offered the title of his father by Prince Philip. The palace announced that Prince Edward would receive the title after the monarch’s death. Until then, Prince Charles is the honorary bearer. As soon as Charles ascends the throne, the Duke title will be free again and will be presented to the 57-year-old due to his decades of commitment to the “Duke of Edinburgh Award”.

According to the Royal expert Richard Kay, Charles could now pass over his brother Prince Edward and instead transfer the title to his grandson Prince Louis (3). Prince Charles would break the promise of his father and the palace. However, the Prince of Wales will not be able to make this decision until he himself sits on the throne and has authority over the titles.

Why should Prince Louis become Duke of Edinburgh?

It has been rumored for years that the future king would want to streamline the royal family. “Against the backdrop of a leaner monarchy, the prince has ideas about working royals, their titles and how they fit into his vision of a modern Britain,” Kay told the Daily Mail. The problem is not Prince Edward, but the passing on of the title to his son James, Viscount Seven (13). He is brought up to “expect a life outside of the royal family,” says Kay.

With Prince Louis, Charles would hand over the title to Prince Williams’ youngest son, who will continue to be classified as a working royal in the coming decades, and the title of “Duke of Edinburgh” will thus be retained within the senior royals.

Prince Philip promised the title to his youngest son

As Countess Sophie von Wessex (56) once revealed in an interview with “Daily Telegraph”, there is a touching anecdote behind the promise of the title. Prince Philip visited his son a few days after the engagement to Sophie and asked if he wanted to be the next Duke of Edinburgh. “He literally came right in and said, ‘Good. I would be very happy if you would consider that,'” said the 56-year-old.
