On Sunday, January 14, 2024, the world will look to Denmark: After 52 years on the throne, Queen Margrethe, 83, has abdicated and handed over the scepter to her son – Crown Prince Frederik has become King Frederik X. At 3 p.m., the 55-year-old was proclaimed Denmark’s new monarch by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 46, on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.

A historic moment that his four children didn’t want to miss. Contrary to expectations, not only the new Crown Prince Christian, 18, took part in the proclamation, Princess Isabella, 16, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, both 13, were also at Christiansborg Palace and appeared at the royal palace afterwards with their parents Balcony.

Also present, but not on the balcony, was Frederik’s younger brother Prince Joachim, 54. Without his wife Princess Marie, 47, and his children, the royal, who lives in Washington DC, traveled to Copenhagen to witness the change of throne up close. The first photos show Joachim in the car on the way to Amalienborg Palace after the proclamation. He waves somewhat cautiously to the numerous Royal fans on the street.

However, Prince Joachim will not be staying in his homeland for long, as the palace has already announced. On Monday, January 15th, there will be a reception to mark the change of throne in the Danish Parliament at 10 a.m. – after which the 54-year-old will leave immediately. The reason: Joachim works as a defense attaché in Washington and has to get back to work. His wife and their children Countess Athena, 11, and Count Henrik, 14, are also waiting for him.
