After just an hour, officials removed the notice of Prince Philip’s death from the gate of Buckingham Palace.

After the death of Prince Philip (1921-2021) on April 9th, officials of the Royals attached a corresponding framed notice to the gate of Buckingham Palace – and removed it after an hour, as reported by the British “BBC”. This was done to prevent mass gatherings during the corona pandemic.

People lay flowers

Despite the pandemic, citizens had come to Buckingham Palace to put down flowers and memorial cards. At the beginning there were about 30 people in front of the gates of the palace, at this point four police officers on horseback had already tried to prevent a larger crowd from forming. Even if the people wore protective masks, the police reminded those present of the current social distancing guidelines.

The announcement had previously been published on the Internet. “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” it reads. Philip died peacefully on the morning of April 9th at Windsor Castle. Together with many people around the world, the family mourns the loss. Further announcements will follow in due course.

A similar notice was posted at the Palace of Holyrood, the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II (94) in Edinburgh. Published images also show that people also laid flowers and condolences in front of Norwich Gates at the Sandringham House estate.
