It sounds dramatic, but Prince William could end the monarchy in Great Britain. At least that’s what Graham Smith, the CEO of Republic, thinks.

The organization is committed to the abolition of the monarchy and the replacement of Queen Elizabeth, 94, with an elected, democratic head of state. So an end to the institution would come in handy for Graham Smith. And that doesn’t seem to rule out the possibility, as he explains to “Express.co.uk”. If both Prince William, 39, and his son Prince George, 7, decide against the throne, it would be the “death knell” for the palace, he thinks.

“It would end the line of succession”

Whether Prince George will ever ascend to the throne would “ultimately depend on whether his father and grandpa will let him go,” said Smith. One can only hope that their wellbeing and freedom will be their top priority. “If George is older and says he has no interest in it, and for them the family is above the institution and they let him go, then I think that would be the death knell for the monarchy,” he is sure and pursues : “It would destroy the entire institution, it would end the line of succession.” The reason: In his opinion, the people would no longer tolerate a shift in the line of succession in our day and age.

Does the fate of the monarchy lie in Prince Williams hands?

But the future of the British royal family is not only in Prince George’s hands. Graham Smith thinks Prince William could also take this step. “I think the chances are very good that one of them will leave one day and that will be the end of it all.”

Change with Prince Charles coronation

One who sees it very differently is the British PR consultant and commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, who is heavily criticizing the anti-monarchy campaign of “Republic”. After all, the active members of the Royal Family would attend thousands of official appointments a year. He also believes there will be a change in the company when Prince Charles takes the throne. “The central role of the monarch remains the same as that of the royal family. It is linked to royal duties, patronage, foreign travel and so on,” he clarified.
