Princess Diana was said to have had many affairs. There wasn’t much truth to some rumours, other relationships are confirmed.
She became famous as the wife of the British heir to the throne, but the marriage between Princess Diana (1961-1997) and Prince Charles (73) was known to be an unhappy relationship. Even before the separation, the royal beauty fell in love with other men.
Prince Charles
Despite the fairytale wedding in July 1981, there was no happy ending between the then Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer, and Charles. Charles is said to have reconnected with his longtime lover Camilla Parker Bowles (75) shortly after the wedding. “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” said Diana in 1995 in the scandalous BBC interview that journalist Martin Bashir (59) obtained by presenting forged documents. Her biographer Andrew Morton (69) published her book “Diana: Her True Story” in 1992. In it, the love affair between Camilla and Charles was revealed. Diana herself served as the main source, as later emerged. Charles and Diana separated in December 1992 and divorced in 1996.
James Hewitt
In the scandalous interview in which Diana chatted about Charles and Camilla in 1995, she also admitted her own affair with James Hewitt (64). Diana and Hewitt met in 1986, and the princess hired him as a riding instructor. 1992 was the end. Diana explained on TV about her ex: “Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him. But I was terribly disappointed.”
Barry Mannakee
Hewitt also has the name of another alleged love interest of Diana: he published his autobiography in 1999, in which he claimed, among other things, that the princess had confessed to him about a previous affair with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee (1947-1987). There are also indications of this on private recordings of Diana, which were played in a controversial TV documentary. In it, she confessed that she had fallen in love with an unnamed member of her circle at the age of 24 and already married. It is said to have been police officer and bodyguard Barry Mannakee, who later died in a motorcycle accident.
Will Carling
The name Will Carling (56) is also often mentioned in the British press when it comes to Diana’s love affairs. However, the former England rugby captain has always made it clear publicly that he was a close friend and not a lover. Diana and the athlete reportedly met at a gym in 1995.
James Gilbey
James Gilbey caused a scandal with Diana: Squidgygate. The name refers to intercepted telephone conversations between Diana and her childhood friend Gilbey, in which he addressed her by the nickname “Squidgy”. The British tabloid “The Sun” published the talks in 1992. The relationship between the two is said to have been at its peak in 1989. Gilbey was then a manager at a racing car manufacturer.
Oliver Hoare
There was supposedly quite a mud fight after Diana’s affair with the married art dealer Oliver Hoare (1945-2018). The two are said to have become closer in 1994. After the line was closed, she is said to have harassed him with hundreds of phone calls at home, as a British newspaper claimed at the time. Which Diana rejected.
Hasnat Khan
Cardiac surgeon Hasnat Khan (64) is considered Diana’s “great love”, she is said to have described him as “Mr. Wonderful”. However, the love only lasted two years. According to Diana’s butler Paul Burrell (64), she drew a line in June 1997. In a written statement to an inquest into Diana’s death, Hasnat Khan said their relationship began in the summer of 1995. They even talked about getting married, but the constant media attention put him off: “My biggest fear about marriage was that my life would be hell because she was who she was.”
Dodi Al Fayed
In July 1997 it came out that Dodi Al-Fayed (1955-1997) is the new man at Diana’s side. The film producer was the son of Egyptian businessman Mohamed Al-Fayed (93). Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed were spotted on vacation together in the summer of 1997. However, the two only had a few weeks: Dodi Al-Fayed and Diana died in a car accident in Paris on August 31.
