The British royals are happy to have offspring: Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have become parents. A first – albeit small – look at the baby is also granted.

Princess Eugenie, 30, and Jack Brooksbank, 34, announced the birth of their first child through a message from the palace and Instagram. The royal baby takes eleventh place in the line of succession to the British throne and is the ninth great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth, 94.

Royals are happy: Baby for Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

"Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie gave birth to a son today, February 9, 2021, at 8:55 am in Portland Hospital. Jack Brooksbank was present," the palace wrote on the royal family's website. "The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of York, Sarah, the Duchess of York and Mr. and Mrs. George Brooksbank have been informed and are pleased with the news." Princess Eugenie and her child are fine, it is assured. The little one weighs the equivalent of 3657 grams (8lbs 1oz).

First photo of the royal baby

Princess Eugenie is known to be one of the few royals who have a personal Instagram account. There she shared a photo at the same time as the palace was announced. The black-and-white photo shows the baby's hand being lovingly touched by the hands of his father and mother. The princess simply posts three blue hearts.

Will the baby get a royal title?

As things stand, Princess Eugenie's baby will neither become a royal highness nor a prince. This goes back to a decision by King George V in 1917, according to which the circle of titleholders is limited. Eugenie's baby will also not receive a title of nobility such as Duke or Count, as his father does not hold such a rank. The Queen could change that and raise Jack Brooksbank to the nobility, but that seems very unlikely.

"Eugenie knows that a title can be both a curse and a blessing, and she and Jack want their child to lead a normal life and work to make a living," a source told Vanity Fair magazine.

This is how Princess Eugenie's baby will grow up

Since the child neither has a royal title nor is one of the front seats in the line of succession, they will not have to perform any duties for the royal family in the course of their lives and, like Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, will be free to decide about their lives. For these reasons, it is to be expected that Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's baby will rarely be seen in public.
