Princess Sofia: fashion mishap at the state banquet

The Swedish royals welcome the Dutch royal couple to the state banquet at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. Of course only the most elegant robes are worn. With a royal, the choice of outfit seems to have been quite spontaneous.

In addition to the two royal couples, the Swedish heir to the throne Princess Victoria, 45, with her husband and Prince Carl Philip, 43, with Princess Sofia, 37, are also present at the state banquet. For the latter, the outfit seems to have been a last-minute decision. The dark green dress is noticeably too long for the mother of three.

Princess Sofia messes up with her choice of clothes

Princess Sofia attends the state banquet in a dark green robe that has several things that stand out. On the one hand there is the shade, which suits the 37-year-old very well. It really makes her shine, it goes perfectly with her dark hair. The Carmen neckline of the dress is daring as it shows Sofia quite a bit of skin. Her back tattoo is once again visible in the robe.

What is also noticeable: Sofia wears her sash on bare skin – a no-go and a violation of royal etiquette? Expert Mats Danielsson explains:

“Magdalena Ribbing once said that ribbons should not be worn on bare skin, and that is not the case. But at the same time, we have a Crown Princess who has worn a sash on her bare skin at a number of Nobel Prize celebrations. So you could say that “It’s accepted. Times are changing. But if you’re really serious about the old etiquette, then the sash shouldn’t be worn on bare skin.”

Thus, according to tradition, it is not proper to drape a ribbon over an uncovered shoulder. But times are changing, so it’s “acceptable”.

What else is striking about the look of Carl Philip’s wife: the dress seems to be too big for Sofia. There is too much fabric both on the arms and in the overall length. The sleeves are a little unbuttoned, but still protrude over the hands. The fashion mishap is particularly evident at the hem of the dress. The fabric lies on the floor, compresses upwards, which greatly distorts the proportions. This makes Sofia look much smaller. Was the dress a short-term choice and there was no time left for tailoring?

Silvia, Victoria and Sofia rely on the same dress form

In a direct comparison of the three Swedish royals, it is also noticeable that they all use the same dress form, but with different tops.

The robes are tightly cut at the waist, sometimes even trimmed with a fabric band. While Silvia is most high-necked with long sleeves, Princess Victoria chooses an asymmetrical one-shoulder top. Sofia relies on the Carmen style.

While the designs of the Swedish royal ladies seem unimaginative and almost a little conservative, Queen Máxima can completely convince with her pink look. The Queen appears in a one-shoulder piece with a side cape by Jantaminiau. She had already worn it once in 2019, when she combined it with a clutch from Namu Lux, just like on Tuesday evening.
