On official occasions, Princess Sofia often wears her palmette tiara, which has a very special feature. The wife of Prince Carl Philip could also borrow other pieces of jewelry from the royal estate. However, some are reserved for the Queen. We reveal here which ones are included.

At the state banquet in honor of the Dutch royal couple on October 11, 2022, Princess Sofia, 37, enchanted in a dark green robe, which, however, had its pitfalls. While she messed up on the choice of dress, the dark green design seemed a few sizes too big for her, she was able to wow when it came to jewelry. Because the wife of Prince Carl Philip, 44, chose the palmette tiara from her own possession. Her in-laws, King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia, had given her the piece of jewelry for their wedding.

The tiara comes with a special feature: you can exchange the gemstones on the tips and thus adapt the design to the respective outfit or the respective occasion. Whether with sapphires, pearls and turquoise – Sofia has already presented the noble piece of jewelery with a wide variety of elements. The tiara can also be worn without it. At the state banquet on October 11, 2022, she wore sapphires on the tips of the piece of jewelery to match the dark green dress.

While Sofia is allowed to borrow other pieces from the royal treasury – she already wore the small steel tiara and the amethyst tiara, among others – there are other pieces she is not allowed to choose.

Some pieces of jewelery are only allowed to be worn by Queen Silvia

Queen Silvia showed up at the state banquet wearing the Braganza tiara, also known as the Coronation or Brazilian tiara. The special piece is reserved for her alone. Not even Crown Princess Victoria can wear it – at least not yet. Only when she herself ascends the throne will she receive this honor. The diadem once belonged to Empress Amalie of Brazil. She bequeathed it to her sister Queen Josefina of Sweden, née Princess of Leuchtenberg, in the 19th century.

The so-called Leuchtenberg tiara is also reserved for the queen. Josephine (in Swedish Josefina) von Leuchtenberg brought the jewel to Sweden when she married Crown Prince Oscar of Sweden in 1823.

Neither Princess Sofia nor Princess Madeleine will ever be allowed to wear the same jewelry because they will never become queens and so they are forbidden from doing so. However, the royal jewelery chamber is quite richly stocked, so that neither Sofia nor Madeleine should have any problems finding something.

On less official occasions, the Swedish royals also like to wear costume jewellery. The royal jewels are only brought out on certain occasions.
