Project Palianytsia: Frogwares unveils a mysterious new game that it will develop despite the war in Ukraine

Ukrainian developers of Frogware suffered the brunt of the invasion of their country by Russia last February. They nevertheless decided not to suspend their activity for as much, and ensured with a little delay the arrival of Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One on PS4, while the Xbox One version is still awaited.

They are even already ready to talk about their next title, dubbed Palianytsia Project, a reference to a local bread whose name Russians have a hard time pronouncing correctly. This is’a narrative game between mystery and horror, totally different from the open world game they wanted to make before the war, but the situation has forced them to review their plans and the way they work in this time of crisis. It should take the form ofa shorter and tighter experience, and its atmosphere should echo the ongoing war. It will be revealed more this summer, but first concept art already bear witness to a somber atmosphere The Sinking City.

We are revealing the game now in this way to simply show people that we are resisting and also as a clear middle finger to those who thought they might just enter our country in hopes of disrupting and ruining our lives.

Although it was difficult, all we published during the war were existing projects that needed to be finalized. We’re now creating something almost entirely from scratch, which is much more difficult under these circumstances, so we had to think carefully about what’s realistic for us. The idea was greenlit for that very reason, because it’s something our current team and setup can offer compared to pre-production of another open-world title, which we were doing before the war.

The name Palianytsia is symbolic for Ukraine, as it is considered part of our national cuisine. But it’s also the phonetic equivalent of Dark Souls for Russians who often can’t pronounce it correctly when trying to impersonate Ukrainians. And now it is often used in the field as a test to quickly identify the possible affiliation of unknown individuals.

Fingers crossed that the situation improves in the coming months and allows Frogware to resume normal activities. Waiting, The Sinking City is available from €19.99 on Amazon.co.uk.
