- Wednesday marked the sixth anniversary of the murder of Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova.
- On the occasion of the anniversary, many people remembered the couple and demonstrated against the current government’s plans.
On February 21, 2018, investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova were shot dead in their home. At the time of his death, Kuciak had been researching connections between the Italian mafia and Slovak politics.
The bloody act led to the resignation of the then head of government, Robert Fico, after mass protests. The left-wing nationalist Prime Minister is now back in power. As in 2018, there were protests in Slovakia on the anniversary of the murders.
The memorial and protest rally was primarily directed against a planned criminal justice reform. The core of the reform is the abolition of a special prosecutor’s office for organized crime and corruption. The opposition accuses the government of wanting to sweep corruption cases from previous periods of government of Smer-SSD, Fico’s party, under the carpet.
Special prosecutors were abused
The government contradicts the opposition’s allegations. From 2020 to 2023, the special public prosecutor’s office was misused by the incumbent opposing government for a political fight against the Fico party. The mourning for the killed couple is now being exploited by opponents of the incumbent government president for party political purposes.
