PS4 crisis: Now the last-gen console is also getting really expensive

You thought of just getting a PS4 Pro instead of a PS5 – can’t be that expensive these days, can it? Well, given the current price point, you might want to refrain from thinking about it.

PlayStation consoles are getting more and more expensive and that no longer just means the ominous PS5: while the PS4 Pro from June to August 2021 only cost 389 euros (and before that it was always a little more or a little less), you can now afford it for 800 euros. Or even 1,000 euros! If that’s not a good deal for a 5 year old console, then we don’t know what is.

After a lack of chips, the PS4 contingent has probably been used up

One of the main reasons for the lack of PS5 consoles is the global shortage of chips that arose during the corona crisis. To date, the chip manufacturers are behind schedule – and the increasing demand is not helping either. Incidentally, it can be assumed that the PS5 normally available in 2023 at the earliest will be, then until then the chip shortage should still prevail.

However, a next-gen console is available – the Xbox Series S:

Meanwhile, players seem to be using the PS4: the console is no longer new, but the PS4 Pro in particular can play all the old and many of the new games without any problems. Better than nothing? In the meantime, however, it is no longer worth buying the PS4 new – on Amazon, for example, you can no longer get the PS4 Pro and the slim version costs almost 500 euros. The release price was only 299.99 euros.

You can see how much the prices of the PS4 Pro have increased in the last year price comparison (Source: idealo). A few days ago, the PS4 Pro reached its price peak, with 1,149.99 euros per console. When it was released, it cost 399.99 euros.

Sony announced earlier this year that they would continue to produce PS4 consoles: so it’s not because they’ve said goodbye to the console.

However, new PS4 consoles to be produced may also struggle with the lack of chips. Either way, you should refrain from buying a new PS4 console at the moment so as not to buy completely overpriced hardware that expires soon.
