PS5: an update on the sales figures as of December 31, 2021, already behind on the PS4

Despite the semiconductor crisis, the PS5 sold well in its first months of operation, exceeding the targets set by Sony Interactive Entertainment and even starting the PS4. At last count, we were at 13.4 million consoles next gen shipped on September 30, 2021.

The manufacturer has just made a new point at the bend of its financial statement for the quarter from October to December. At the end of 2021, we therefore had 17.3 million copies in circulation, 3.9 million more than in the previous quarter. This is down from the period from October to December 2020, when 4.5 million consoles next gen had been sold, helped by the stocks prepared ahead of the launch. And especially, this is the first time that the cadence has been below that of the launch of the PS4, which had an exceptional Christmas 2014, without a technological crisis to slow down its success. The objective is therefore no longer to exceed the PS4 and its 22.4 million sales by March 31, but “only” to reach 19.3 million consoles shipped.

Sales are expected to be lower than expected in October due to an expected decline in sales of PlayStation 5 hardware units, primarily due to component shortages, particularly semiconductors.

Moreover, the PlayStation 4 only sold 200,000 units compared to 1.4 million last year : the figures could start to rise again in 2022, thanks to the production of new consoles old gen. There were a total of 92.7 million games sold this quarter across both generations of machines, 11.5 million less than the previous equivalent year, while the number of subscribers to Playstation Plus rose slightly to 48 million600,000 more than in December 2020. Logically, the turnover of the division Game & Network Services is down to 813.3 billion yen (approximately 6.29 billion euros), but net income increased slightly to 92.9 billion yen (approximately 720 million euros). So everything is going pretty well for EIS despite the context.
