While there have been new tennis games every now and then in recent years, such as Tennis World Tour or AO International Tennis, none of the titles can match the depth of gameplay, popular gameplay, and most importantly, the cult following of brands like Top Spin or Virtua Tennis.
After many years, many fans of tennis games are finally wishing for new titles from these brands: Top Spin 5 and Virtua Tennis 5. However, these are not foreseeable and therefore it is definitely worth taking a look at the upcoming tennis game Matchpoint – Tennis Championships, which will be released for PS4 in spring 2022 , PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC will be released.
Publisher sets the bar quite high in advance and claims: “Matchpoint – Tennis Championships will be the most accurate and realistic tennis simulation ever developed”.
There is already a first trailer for this, included above, which probably also briefly shows a few game scenes (“gameplay”). However, neither Kalypso nor developer Torus (Beast Quest, Ben 10) goes into special gameplay features.
Scope and Licenses
However, a career mode including a rivalry system and character editor, a local multiplayer mode and online multiplayer have been confirmed. You should also be able to watch replays for special highlights.
There are only a few licenses for the really big tennis stars. After all, there are among others: Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Kei Nishikori, Taylor Fritz, Garbine Muguruza or Victoria Azarenka.

It remains questionable whether Matchpoint – Tennis Championships will live up to the expectations of those fans who long for a successful, modern tennis simulation.
We hope that the developers will succeed in creating a simulation that can be a “spiritual successor” to cult games such as Virtua Tennis 4 (2011) or Top Spin 4 (2011). But we would also be happy about a remake or remaster of the still convincing Jimmy Connors Pro Tennis Tour (1991, SNES) – preferably with online mode.
