Krafton, formerly known as Bluehole, the developer and publisher of PUBG, through the subsidiary PUBG Studio, has just sued Garena, company that marketed Free Fire and Free Fire Max, for plagiarism. The first indeed reproaches the second for too strong similarities with its game, on several aspects, such as the plane, the gameplay (especially on mobile), the weapons and the overall structure of the game.
Apart from the very striking resemblances (see below), Krafton believes that Garena spawned ” hundreds of millions of dollars thanks to the various microtransactions present in the mobile game. But the South Korean studio does not stop there, since it is also suing Apple and Google for distributing these titles, and YouTube, for hosting videos of Garena games, but also a Chinese film very largely inspired by PUBG (but unrelated to Garena).
Krafton would have, before launching all this, asked Garena to stop the distribution of its two games, a request which would have been rejected, which explains this legal action. The studio would also have made the request to Google and Apple so that the titles no longer appear in the catalogs, something which also seems to have been refused. We will know a little more in the weeks and months to come, but it is possible that the distribution of Free Fire, very popular and lucrative in some countries, especially in Asia, where PUBG Mobile has not always been playable, be prohibited.
For his part, Garena spoke, through Jason Golz, spokesperson for Sea, the parent company, explaining that “ Krafton’s claims are baseless “. We let you judge for yourselves the similarities between the two titles.
